I Like My Sleeves

PhreakShowSubmissionsChart

Because I love charts and data and spreadsheets.

Also because, why the hell not? Transparency is a trait of mine.

Sometimes that characteristic gets me in trouble, but it is an undeniable part of me. Often, I’m told, it is refreshing. Either way, it’s who I am. And I am a proud phreak who has learned to be comfortable in his own skin.

I wear my heart on my sleeve. I’ve thought of maybe changing to metaphorical tank tops—-or even going shirtless. Alas, I like my sleeves, and I like to leave my vulnerability dangling out there for everyone to see and prod. So, yeah. I feel better now. Huzzah for catharsis via confessional graphics.

If you’re feeling like, perhaps, there is more to the story, you are correct. Sometimes, even transparency has is limits, and a little opacity is required. If you’re reading this Invisible Ink, I ❤ your face. Wear your hearts on your sleeves, you bunch of phreaks.

  1. I have everything on spreadsheets, but now that I saw your pie chart, I’m going to have to expand my horizons. Good luck with your outstanding submissions. You know I’m head-over-heels in love with your book, so I’m rooting for you.

    • I am a spreadsheet junkie. If I can categorize something, give it column headers, insert tricksy functions–Lucas is a happy boy!

Thanks for the rooting! This here Pie Chart for Phreak Show is waaaay more amazing than one would have been for either Freeborn or Capritare.

I need one more pie slice [probably fluorescent purple] which details “Offers of Rep”. 😉

  2. Your percentages for requests, full and partial, are admirable. Combine that with the personalized responses and I’d say you are on the right track. It only takes “one” acceptance. ONE! I’m not as far along in the query process as you, and so have not yet received requests of any kind yet. *fingers crossed*

And yes, I like my sleeves too.

  3. Hey John,
I’ve been submitting short stories to online magazines. I have 5 out right now–so far 2 form rejections. Good luck with finding the right place for your stories 🙂

Can I ask you a question? How long do you wait before considering a response as ‘no response?’

    Keep smiling,
    Yawatta

    • I chalk a submission up as a “non-response” based on the high end of an agent’s stated response time. Querytracker is a good resource for actual, average response times, as well. ~Lucas
